I enjoyed Cork from the very beginning, but I have come to appreciate him more and more with the passing years, when I discover all of the things that he’s capable of, and all of the ways in which he’s all too human.”Įven after so much time in Cork’s head, Krueger still describes him as “the kind of guy I would sit down over a beer with, and just have a good, long intimate conversation with.”ĭoes he maintain a master list of events and details from Cork’s life? “Wouldn’t that be a good idea?” Krueger laughed. “We’ve been friends for about 30 years now,” Krueger said in a phone interview, after answering the call with old-fashioned politesse: “Kruegers, this is Kent.” He went on: “I began working on the first manuscript in this series in the spring of 1992. What’s it like to write about the same character in book after book? Does your fictional creation start to feel like a beloved family member or a friend who occasionally gets on your nerves? As the voice of Cork O’Connor, the part-Irish, part-Ojibwe former small-town Minnesota sheriff who just sleuthed his way through a 19th novel, William Kent Krueger seems like the perfect author to answer these questions.

They predicted the end of the world in 1914, 1918, 19 … their obsession with the end of the world is ongoing. In a column six years ago I also mentioned Barbara Anderson, a JW for 43 years and major whistleblower, the late Ray Franz, author of Crisis of Conscience ( NuLife Press, 5th ed., 2018) and former member of the Witnesses’ Governing Body, and Candace Conti, a victim of child abuse whose lawsuit cost the Watchtower millions of dollars. He is now 89, but is still trying to help former members. Keep him in mind when Jehovah’s Witnesses show up at your door. Ever since I met Penton I’ve regarded him as a hero for his courage to keep faith in God despite Kingdom Hall hatred and worldwide attacks. His book Apocalypse Delayed ( University of Toronto Press, 3rd ed., 2015) is the most significant scholarly study of Witnesses, period. Watch Tower Society leaders, instead of listening to Penton’s evidence of corruption and false teachings in the group, kicked him out along with his wife Marilyn, other family members and fellow Witnesses from their Lethbridge, Alta., congregation.Īfter his excommunication Penton became one of the world’s most influential critics of Jehovah’s Witnesses. My first single-author book Crisis of Allegiance ( Welch, 1986) has stood the test of time. Understanding those who knock on our doors Tuchman dramatizes the diplomatic debacles that precipitated the war and the intransigence of the German and French armies as they dogmatically adhered to their battle plans, with disastrous consequences. Nowhere are her talents more brilliantly on display than in her Pulitzer Prize–winning bestseller The Guns of August (1962), a riveting account of the outbreak of World War I and the weeks of fighting leading up to the First Battle of the Marne in September 1914. A shrewd portraitist, she laid bare the all-too-human failures of leaders caught in the pull of historical currents and often tragically blinded by biases of culture and temperament. Tuchman distilled the complex interplay of personalities and events into gripping narratives that combine lucid scholarship with elegant literary art. Published: October 27th 2016 by Silver Wing Press Revealing details about the experiences of both patient and donor during kidney surgery will enlighten those inside and outside the loop of kidney disease. Other medical crises, as well as conflicts between Grubbs and her husband regarding treatment, followed. It took several surgeries and a considerable amount of luck before the transplanted kidney started working properly. Robert’s kidney replacement, which took place after a long period of dialysis, hardly ended his struggles. While her husband, Robert, is sometimes overly romanticized, the author doesn’t sugarcoat much else in her life. She darts in and out of her experiences in medical school and residency, occasionally landing in a room with one of her patients. Moving around, occasionally confusingly, in time, Grubbs explores how an African-American girl from a country town in North Carolina came to become a doctor and move to San Francisco. The author’s absorbing first book leads with that personal interest story, but it doesn’t end there. Grubbs (Medicine/Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital) came by her medical specialty honestly: she fell in love with and later married a man with end-stage kidney disease a few months into their relationship, she donated a kidney to him. Praise for the House of Night Series:, The Casts have put a very interesting new spin on vampire lore. Science is more than a body of knowledge it is a way of thinking. This is the excerpt from the passage containing that quote which was shared most frequently: Amid talk of “alternative facts” and a “post-truth” world that dominated the news directly after the inauguration of President Donald Trump on 20 January 2017, a quote from astrophysicist and science communicator Carl Sagan emerged as a viral meme: Niall Ferguson ( MA, DPhil, FRSE, is the Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and a senior faculty fellow of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard. The fatal mistake is to write history as if it were bound to happen the way it happened.” - Niall Ferguson These alternate worlds, these histories that didn’t happen, have to be alive in your mind when you are writing history. There was a moment when a Soviet submarine commander gave the order to fire a nuclear torpedo at US naval surface ships, so we came within a hair’s breadth of World War III. That the Cuban Missile Crisis ended in both sides essentially backing down was not predetermined. “One of the things that’s exciting about the study of history is you are trying to remind yourself again and again that what happened, that what we know happened, might have gone the other way. It is gorgeous, creepy and gets very creative with a very simple concept. Junji Ito has a habit of writing cult classic horror manga, and just like Gyo and Uzumaki, Tomie is no exception to that rule. It is never explained what Tomie is or how she ended up that way but that just adds to the mystery. You see, Tomie is immortal and has a very particular set of powers. All of which involve someone falling for Tomie and it going horrifically wrong. The manga series is written like a collection of stories. Tomie is about a beautiful girl called Tomie (obviously), who is so gorgeous and lovely that she drives people insane. It is a cult classic manga series that has spawned eight films and a television series. I can’t believe it took me this long to get around to reading Tomie. Oh Junji Ito, you are the king of my horror manga reviews and have burned so many weird images into my brain. |
